Krakow is sometimes called Poland’s cultural capital. A city of art and literature, Krakow is permanently inscribed in the history of Polish culture due to the many artists and authors it has produced. Starting in the Main Market Square you can see artistic works from across the ages: the masterpiece of Wit Stwosz (Veit Stoss) - the altar - carved in wood which stands in St. Mary’s Basilica, the Secession polychromy of Stanislaw Wyspianski in the Franciscans church or the avant-garde art of Tadeusz Kantor. You can see the best examples of the modern art in several art galleries like in Zderzak Gallery.
Krakow is also a centre for the literature. The Nobel prize winner Wislawa Szymborska lives and works here. With a bit of luck you could meet Slawomir Mrozekin the streets.
